The chemistry is already chemistry-ing.

The production of We Live in Time was just announced in March 2023, but it’s already my entire personality. Not much is known about the “immersive love story” starring Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh, but putting those two names together is enough to get most of the internet on board. The moment these two were paired up as Oscar presenters on March 12, viewers were practically begging for a rom-com.

Days later Hollywood producers delivered. On March 14, Deadline announced that Garfield and Pugh were “in negotiations” to star in We Live in Time, which was described as “a funny, deeply moving and immersive love story.” Well, based on photos from the set that made their way online in early April, negotiations are over. (Insert the “Oh, my God, it's happening” gif from The Office here.)

Here’s everything we know about We Live in Time, starring Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh.

Who is involved? On March 14, Deadline revealed that Garfield, 39, and Pugh, 27, were attached to the project from production companies StudioCanal and SunnyMarch. John Crowley, who worked with Garfield on the 2007 drama Boy A, is set to direct, with Wanderlust creator Nick Payne writing the script. Crowley is best known for his work on the award-winning film Brooklyn starring Saoirse Ronan.

Adam James is currently the only other actor listed on IMDB as a member of the cast, and Oscar-nominated actor Benedict Cumberbatch will serve as an executive producer.

What is We Live in Time about? Deadline reports that the plot is being kept “under wraps” but is “being described as a funny, deeply moving and immersive love story.” This is particularly exciting for fans of Garfield and Pugh, as neither British actor is known for particularly lighthearted roles (discounting Garfield’s The Amazing Spider-Man era).

“It’s no secret that I only pick very intense roles,” Pugh said during the premiere of A Good Person on March 8, per Variety. In that film, penned and directed by Pugh’s ex-boyfriend Zach Braff, the actor plays a recovering addict. “I like finding the ugliness in humans. I love being raw. I love being given a script where it challenges myself, and I have never picked a role unless I’ve been scared of it.”

Garfield and Pugh met in person for the first time at the 2023 Oscars rehearsal. “I met him over Zoom a few months ago but at the rehearsal was the first time that I met him,” Pugh said during an interview with Entertainment Tonight. “So it was like so relieving that it worked and we got along and we laugh—we can laugh at everything. And then, of course, on the day I made so many near mistakes that he just saved me for.”

Let’s have a look, shall we? Though Deadline initially reported that filming was set to begin “later this year,” we didn’t have to wait long at all. On April 3, four photos of Garfield and Pugh that had allegedly been taken on the set of the film hit Twitter (you can see them here). In one, Pugh lifts up a fruit for Garfield to smell outside some kind of farmer’s market; the other features both actors smiling while holding cups of coffee. Don’t ask me what any of this means, but Garfield’s hiatus beard is gone and the chemistry is already chemistry-ing.
